Adelaide-born media figure and finance commentator David Koch has been awarded an “Honorary Doctor of the University from Flinders University”, recognising a career that has shaped how Australians understand money, business, and the broader economy.

The honour acknowledges Koch’s decades-long contribution to media and finance, along with his ongoing advocacy for small businesses and his consistent promotion of South Australia on the national stage. Beginning his career in the early 1980s as a financial journalist, he went on to become a leading voice in consumer finance, helping everyday Australians navigate everything from budgeting to investing.

Beyond journalism, Koch has built an extensive business portfolio, launching media agency Pinstripe Media and digital marketing firm KBB Digital, both focused on supporting small business growth. He also co-founded ausbiz, a business and finance streaming platform, and later stepped into the role of Economic Director at Compare the Market Australia.

Most Australians will know him best as ‘Kochie’, the long-time co-host of Sunrise, where he spent 21 years on air, a record in Australian breakfast television, and earned two Silver Logie nominations during his tenure.

His contributions extend well beyond media. Koch was named Australian Father of the Year in 2007 and, more recently, appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2024 for his service to media and economic journalism. He also plays a key role in shaping South Australia’s visitor economy as Chair of the South Australian Tourism Commission, alongside his position as Chairman of the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Flinders University Chancellor John Hood said, “This is an honor seldom given but richly deserved by David Koch.”

“He is a trusted figure and skilled communicator, who has devoted much of his life and career to helping Australians better understand personal finance – and being a strong voice for small businesses, which are so vital to our state’s economy, and the nation’s.”

“David passionately, and tirelessly, champions South Australia.”

During his acceptance speech, Koch said, “What a great honour.”

“Whatever you do in life, whatever you achieve, whatever your success – your resilience and, frankly, life’s joys, will be centred around the team that you have around you.”

“The team around you now and also the team you will add into the future.”

“I was lucky that the two heroes in my life are my Dad and Grandfather as I grew up in Largs North. Two extraordinary role models.”

“My team is a wife of now 47 years, 4 married children, 10 grandchildren.”
