Abu Dhabi’s specialist sports clubs say they are beginning to see the results of a plan launched less than five years ago to build stronger pathways for elite athletes.
Six clubs were formed in November 2021 under a decision by Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council. They cover fencing, athletics, weightlifting, archery, aquatic sports and tennis.
The aim was not only to improve top-level performance, but also to widen participation and make sport a bigger part of daily life in the emirate.
Since then, the clubs have worked with schools and used more structured training programmes to identify young athletes earlier and move them into competitive environments.
Recent results suggest that approach is starting to pay off.
The Abu Dhabi Aquatic Sports Club topped the standings at the Finswimming World Cup in Abu Dhabi with 51 medals. Swimmer Hussain Shawqi also set a new Arab record in the 50-metre freestyle.
The Abu Dhabi Athletics Club won six medals at the Arab Women’s Club Championship. It also said a talent identification project involving 16 schools helped deliver 66 local medals and five national records.
There has been progress in other sports, too.
The Abu Dhabi Weightlifting Club won gold and silver at the Open Masters Games Abu Dhabi 2026, while Hamad Al Hammadi became the first Emirati to claim a silver medal at the Under-13 World Championships in archery.
Officials say those gains have come with support from Abu Dhabi Sports Council, which has backed the clubs with facilities and administrative support as part of a wider push to strengthen sport in the emirate.
Humaid Al Houti, chairman of the aquatic sports club, and Khalid Rashid Al Zaabi, chairman of the athletics club, said the early results show a long-term plan to create a stronger pipeline for national teams.
Lubna Al Shamsi, chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Archery Club, said continued backing was helping to develop a new generation of athletes with the potential to compete at the highest level.
Four years on, there are signs that the foundation work is taking shape.
