The quarterback situation is the talk of the town for the Cleveland Browns this offseason. With a new head coach leading the way in Todd Monken, it’s not entirely clear who will start for the team come Week 1 of the 2026-27 season. On Wednesday, Monken at least shared how he will plan practices for Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel.
While talking with media members on Wednesday, Monken claimed the plan is to give each of the three quarterbacks reps with the first team, second team, and even third team and evaluate from there, according to a segment on “NFL on ESPN.” Overall, Monken, who is 60 years old, thinks each of Watson, Sanders, and Gabriel brings something unique to the table.
“Other than, yeah, someone is gonna have to start off first,” said Monken. “Someone is gonna go second. Someone is gonna go third. And then we’ll be willing to switch that. That’s easily on a daily basis; it’s what we see. Just like any position. That’s not set in stone.”
Based on Monken’s comments, it sounds like the Browns will have a true camp battle for the quarterback position this offseason. Deshaun Watson is set to play in his eighth season in the NFL, while Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are entering Year 2.
Watson, who is 30 years old, did not play in the 2025-26 season while recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered in the previous season. He also dealt with a re-tear during the recovery phase in January 2025.
Meanwhile, Sanders played eight games for the Browns last season, starting in seven. He finished with 1,400 passing yards and seven touchdowns while completing 56.6% of his pass attempts. As for Gabriel, he played in 10 games, starting in six. The former Oregon Duck finished with 937 passing yards and two touchdowns with a 59.5% completion percentage.
