Android could soon introduce a new feature aimed at improving how notifications are managed. Early signs of a system called “Notification Rules” have been identified in Android 17 Beta 3.
The update suggests that Google is working to expand Android’s existing notification system, which already includes features such as Notification Channels, Notification Cooldown, Modes, and Notification Organizer.
New Notification Controls
According to findings reported by Android Authority, Notification Rules will allow users to create conditions based on apps or specific contacts.
When a rule is triggered, users can choose from several actions. These include silencing notifications, blocking them entirely, silencing and grouping them, or highlighting them. Additional options such as “Highlight” and “Highlight and Alert” suggest a new way of prioritizing certain notifications, possibly through visual or alert-based emphasis.
This system could allow users to block calls from selected contacts or assign higher priority to messages from specific people.
Broader Availability Expected
References to Notification Rules have also appeared in builds of Samsung’s One UI 9, indicating that the feature may not be limited to Pixel devices.
If implemented, Notification Rules could extend Android’s existing notification controls by introducing more customizable and condition-based behavior.
