Yugen is a foundational Japanese concept, it’s that profound, almost indescribable sense of wonder when encountering something deeply beautiful.
It’s like watching the sun sink behind the stillness of the ocean, seemingly being swallowed up by the depth of the water. It’s a subtle elegance of a dancer’s gesture, a sailboat drifting behind islands, distantly and dramatically.
Partner duo Eda Tevrizci and Cemal had this unexplainable beauty at the forefront when creating Yugen Art & Coffee, a new café and art studio designed to evoke that strange shift in the atmosphere.
“A trip to Japan last year truly cemented our vision, experiencing firsthand the Japanese reverence for beauty, craft and quiet ritual left a deep impression on both of us,” Eda said.
Eda is a professional Ebru artist, completing a Master of Digital Media at Victoria University’s College of Arts in 2018, and first began practising traditional Ebru art in Turkey in early 2015, a craft she has continued to refine ever since.
“I’ve been practicing Ebru, a traditional Turkish water marbling, for years and I’ve always believed that art should be woven into everyday life, not reserved for galleries.”
Marbling isn’t limited to canvas, and Eda has long been offering classes that explore the technique across fabric, ceramics, silk scarves and even ornaments.

Coffee happens to be the perfect companion for her artwork, a rewarding gift to the slowness and presence it takes to create a design.
“Cemal brings an incredible eye for detail, a love of Japanese aesthetics and an almost obsessive commitment to getting everything right.”
Together the couple have poured their personality into every corner of the venue, located on King William Road. Art from local artists will adorn the walls and workshops will run regularly, by Eda herself.
“In a world that moves so fast, we wanted to offer a small pocket of stillness.”
The workshops will be gradually introduced, with a special focus on Japanese arts and crafts, so there’s always something new to discover.
The interior is intentionally soft, with warm tones and leather armchairs, and the quite sound of vinyl records playing in the background. It’s a cafe that isn’t trying to be anything it’s not and the menu offering isn’t complicated, just good qaulity.
“On the coffee side, we’re working with Veneziano for our beans, so you can expect exceptional espresso-based drinks, matcha and other specialty drinks.”
“And to go alongside, we’ll have delicious cakes, pastries and desserts, all chosen to complement the experience.”
“We want every visit to feel like a small gift to yourself.”
Yugen Art & Coffee are launching on April 11th, inviting friends and families into a cosy art space, with a side of coffee and cake.
