An encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists after the ultras opened fire on security forces during a cordon and search operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday night, officials said. The operation was launched in the Arhama area following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists.

According to officials, a joint team of the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, acting on specific intelligence about the terrorists’ presence, initiated the search operation in the general area.
During the operation, security personnel noticed suspicious movement. When the suspects were challenged, they opened fire, prompting retaliation from the forces.
“Based on specific intelligence input, joint search operation was launched by #IndianArmy and @JmuKmrPolice in Gen area Arahama of Ganderbal. During the search, vigilant troops observed suspicious activity. On being challenged, terrorists opened fire and own troops retaliated. Operation is in progress,” the Army said.
Gunshots were heard in the area as the brief exchange of fire took place. Sources indicated that contact had been established with two to three terrorists during the initial phase of the operation.
Security forces have since cordoned off the area and intensified search efforts. Additional troops have been mobilised to the site to prevent any escape and to neutralise the threat.
The situation remains under close monitoring as forces continue combing the area to track down the militants.
Officials said the operation is still underway, with further details awaited.
