A Marrickville business has lost almost $50,000 worth of camera equipment suspected stolen by an Uber driver who was supposed to deliver the gear to a production company.
Security footage captured the moment an Uber courier driver pulled up to a camera rental business in Marrickville on March 26. His job was simple: pick up film equipment and deliver it to Mona Vale, a common delivery method in the industry.

But after the equipment was loaded into his car, the driver allegedly drove off, cancelled the trip and disappeared.
“A couple of seconds later, hey Peter, the job was cancelled, I’m sending another Uber. And we were like, what do you mean you’re sending another Uber?” Rentacam’s Peter Soltys told 7NEWS
Inside that car was one camera, four lenses and numerous pieces of equipment, worth a total of $47,455.
“The guy just picked it up, cancelled the job and what now?” Soltys said.

When the business reached out to Uber, the company said: “When they arrived at the pickup location, they were informed that the parcel had already been collected by another driver.”
“Both drivers have stated that they do not currently have the item.”
After security video was provided, Uber said: “We’re currently reviewing this internally and attempting to contact the delivery partner involved to clarify what happened and request the return of the item.”
“I just don’t get it. How can somebody just pick up something and just like, yeah, here we go, that’s it,” Soltys said.

Vision of the man’s face, car and number plate was provided to police six days ago. He hasn’t been found.
If police can’t track down the thief, the production company that leased the equipment will owe Soltys nearly $50,000 without ever even using the gear.
“I don’t know if they’re looking for the guy or not. So we just, yeah,” Soltys said.
