Western Sydney sign Ufuk Talay as new Head Coach on 2yr deal

Western Sydney Wanderers have appointed ex-Sydney FC boss Ufuk Talay as their new Head Coach on a two-year deal.

Fresh off leaving the Sky Blues, Talay has put pen-to-paper on a two-year contract that will see him coach the club from the beginning of the 2026-27 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

However as part of the deal Talay will begin working behind the scenes at the Wanderers effective immediately and will join up with the squad this week to assist current interim Head Coach Gary van Egmond.

“We’ve taken a considered approach to this decision with a clear focus on what’s needed for the future of the club,” said Chairman of the Western Sydney Wanderers, Paul Lederer.

“Our commitment is ensuring we provide the best possible environment for our players and establish the foundations for long-term success.

“Ufuk is from Western Sydney and understands the passion for football in this region. Our priority remains on elevating our players’ performance and giving them the best chance to succeed, while creating a season our members, partners and supporters can be proud of.”

Ahead of the 2026/27 season, Head Coach Ufuk Talay outlined his priorities on and off the pitch.

“Western Sydney is a place built on resilience, hard work and diversity, and that absolutely shapes how I see the game,” said Talay.

“I want the team to reflect that identity: hunger, aggression in the right moments and never taking a backwards step.

“Members and fans can expect to see a side that plays with intensity, presses with purpose and shows courage on the ball. It’s about representing the community with pride and making sure when people watch us, they see themselves in the way the team competes.

He continued: “As we begin preparations, clarity in how we play will be key, along with building consistency across the group. It’s not enough to perform well in patches – we need to raise our minimum standards.

“That comes from improving decision-making, fitness levels and tactical awareness. Both ends of the pitch matter: being more clinical going forward and more organised defensively. Small details win games, so we’ll be focusing on refining them in training.

“The Academy is also hugely important to me. A strong identity is built on developing its own players. Young players bring energy, hunger and real connection to the badge. But it’s not just about giving them opportunities, it’s about preparing them properly so they can succeed when they step into the first team. If they show the right attitude and quality, they will get their chance.”

Following his departure from Sydney FC by mutual consent Talay was replaced by two-time Premiership winner and Championship winning coach Patrick Kisnorbo.

The Sky Blues moved quickly to appoint the former Socceroo on a short-term deal until the end of the season following a poor run of form which had seen Sydney FC win just three of their last 11 matches.

Both Kisnorbo and Talay will now be in their respective camps when the Wanderers host the Sky Blues in the third and final instalment of the Sydney Derby at CommBank Stadium on Saturday, April 11 at CommBank Stadium, albeit Talay won’t be in charge of the home side,

Before that game though the Wanderers face a crucial clash against reigning Champions Melbourne City at AAMI Park on Saturday, with Talay no doubt working with the group this week in preparation for the Round 23 matchup.
