A brand new dessert spot is about to land in the CBD, and it’s bringing something Adelaide hasn’t seen before.
Chelico Dessert & Patisserie has officially opened its doors on Field Street, introducing us Adelaidians to a sweet treat many of us have never tried before – Kakigōri. This cold treat, deriving from Japan, is a shaved ice dessert, known for its ultra-light, fluffy texture and vibrant, layered flavours.
While shaved ice isn’t new, I mean we’ve all heard of a snow cone, but Kakigōri takes things up a notch.
The ice is shaved so finely it melts almost instantly on your tongue, acting as a base for creative toppings, sauces and textures that turn it into a full dessert experience.
Constance the mastermind behind Chelico said the idea came from a love of the overseas dessert and a realisation that Adelaide was missing out.
“I’ve always dreamed of having my own dessert shop,” she said. “A place where I can create and share desserts that truly reflect my vision and style.”
“The inspiration behind focusing on Japanese kakigori came from my very first experience trying it.
“I was genuinely amazed by its light, delicate texture and the way it transforms simple ingredients into something so refined and beautiful.
“From that moment, I knew I wanted to bring this experience to Adelaide, to let more people discover and enjoy something that felt so special to me.”
They’ve now brought the concept here, with a menu designed to feel both fun and a little unexpected.
Flavours range from classic and refreshing to rich and indulgent, with combinations like watermelon pistachio and pink grapefruit yoghurt sitting alongside more decadent options like chocolate and crème brûlée. One standout pairs hojicha with miso caramel, blending savoury and sweet into something completely different.
Beyond Kakigōri, the menu leans heavily into a sweet tooth palate, with mochi waffles, cakes, bubble waffles and a full drinks lineup including matcha-based options and sodas.
The venue itself is a compact, 20-seat space that’s been transformed from a former patisserie into a bright, playful dessert bar. Think marble tables, soft pink tones and an atmosphere that leans just as much into late-night dessert runs as it does casual catch-ups.
Chelico will open daily, running from 4pm into the evening, the perfect spot for when you may be craving after-dinner sweets in the city.
With its mix of eye-catching desserts and a brand new foodie option for Adelaide, it might quickly become a highly talked-about dessert spot. Doors softly opened on March 27, if you’re keen for a icy treat.
