Fate/strange Fake is an adaptation of the light novel series written by Ryohgo Narita and illustrated by Shizuki Morii. Crunchyroll describes the synopsis as such:

In a Holy Grail War, Mages (Masters) and their Heroic Spirits (Servants) fight for the control of the Holy Grail—an omnipotent wish-granting device said to fulfill any desire. Years have passed since the end of the Fifth Holy Grail War in Japan. Now, signs portend the emergence of a new Holy Grail in the western American city of Snowfield. Sure enough, Masters and Servants begin to gather… A missing Servant class… Impossible Servant summonings… A nation shrouded in secrecy… And a city created as a battleground. In the face of such irregularities, the Holy Grail War is twisted and driven into the depth of madness. Let the curtain rise on a masquerade of humans and heroes, made to dance upon the stage of a false Holy Grail.

The anime began its regular TV broadcast on January 3, 2026 (JST) with the re-airing of the Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn- TV special and the series’ first episode. Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn- was originally released in 2023, after a delay from its intended premiere at Fate Project New Year’s Eve TV Special 2022. Meanwhile, the TV anime’s first episode made its initial debut in December 2024. The second episode was screened in advance at FGO Fes. 2025 in August 2025.

The Fate/strange Fake light novel series, published under KADOKAWA’s Dengeki Bunko label/imprint, began in 2015 and has nine volumes as of March 2024 (Update: It has been announced that the 10th and final volume is planned for a summer 2026 release). It is part of the Fate multimedia franchise, with a number of its characters having appeared in other Fate titles. There is a manga version drawn by Morii.

The books previously received an animated TV commercial, storyboarded and unit directed by the TV anime’s co-director Takahito Sakazume. Fate/strange Fake is the series directorial debut for Sakazume and co-director Shun Enokido, who were both action directors on Fate/Apocrypha.
