Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Finance Minister Muzzammil Aslam on Friday praised the Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb and Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik in managing the oil supply situation.
He added that Pakistan’s management of petroleum supplies has been comparatively more effective than that of several neighboring countries.
The meeting brought together federal and provincial leaders to discuss petroleum prices and subsidy reforms in line with directives from the President and Prime Minister.
The Petroleum Division presented the current status of fuel availability across the country, confirming that supplies remain stable and sufficient nationwide.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication proposed technological solutions to implement a targeted subsidy mechanism for petroleum products, focusing on transparency, efficiency, and effective delivery.
Provincial leaders shared perspectives on policy options. Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, commended the federal government for uninterrupted fuel availability while urging behavioral measures to promote conservation. Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb stressed developing multiple policy scenarios and ensuring reductions in international petroleum prices are passed on to consumers. Balochistan Minister Mir Shoaib Nosherwani also provided his insights.
The Finance Division noted that fiscal space is limited, primarily derived from petroleum levy revenues, and emphasized that relief measures must maintain macroeconomic stability.
Senator Aurangzeb highlighted the opportunity to undertake structural reforms, underscoring data-driven decision-making for taxation and subsidies. He emphasized promoting responsible consumption behavior while keeping policy responses fiscally prudent.
Participants agreed to accelerate efforts to finalize a targeted subsidy framework using technological solutions and ensure continued coordination between federal and provincial governments.
The meeting was attended by Chief Ministers and senior ministers from all provinces, Federal Ministers for Petroleum and IT, Federal Secretaries of Finance, Petroleum, IT & Telecommunication, Chief Secretaries, and senior officials including the Chairman of NADRA.
