Schilling’s television career began with a small role in Seven’s police drama Blue Heelers, launching a decades-long career in the industry.

“She said that I had a fighter spirit. And I thought that was quite ironic because in the end, if anything, she ended up having such a fighter spirit,” former MAFS participant Cyrell Paule said.

“She walked the talk, like how she was exactly how she is. Her integrity as a woman, her values, her beliefs. I think that’s what Mel represented,” TV personality Jules Robinson said.

Schilling was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2023, but it went into remission. However, a year later, it came back, spreading to her lungs and brain.

“I know Mel would want people to listen to their body. If something doesn’t seem right, then go and have it investigated. And remember, don’t forget to check your poo,” Bowel Cancer Australia’s Stephanie Bansemer-Brown said.

Her husband Gareth has made an emotional tribute to his “soulmate” following her death.

“I had 15 wonderful years with my soulmate. I’ll be forever thankful,” he wrote.
