Baseball United puts ex-MLB stars in charge
Baseball United has announced a new leadership structure as it prepares for the next stage of its development in the UAE and wider region.
Barry Larkin has been appointed chairman of the board, while Adrián Beltré and Robinson Chirinos will serve as vice chairmen. The league has also named co-founder John Miedreich as chief executive officer with immediate effect.
The Dubai-based competition said the changes are aimed at strengthening the league’s long-term plans as it builds towards its 2026 season, which is due to begin in November.
Larkin, a Hall of Famer and former National League MVP, said the focus is on giving the organisation a stronger base for the years ahead:
“This is about creating a permanent home for professional baseball in the region.”
Beltré said the league has a chance to open up a pathway for players in a part of the world where baseball is still finding its place.
Chirinos said the wider aim is not only to grow the professional side of the game, but also to build stronger links with fans, communities and younger players.
The appointments place former Major League players at the centre of the league’s board and future planning.
Miedreich moves into the CEO role after previously overseeing baseball operations, fundraising, government relations, investor relations and the development of Baseball United Ballpark.
Baseball United said his background includes more than 20 years with the New York City Police Department, where he led large operations and worked on international initiatives, including in the Middle East.
He said the league’s next step will be to build on the base laid over the past three years and work more closely with partners in the UAE and across the region.
“Our focus now is disciplined execution and scalable growth,” Miedreich said. He added that the league wants to improve the on-field product, expand its broadcast reach and offer a better experience for fans and commercial partners during the 2026 season.
Baseball United has already staged events in the UAE including the UAE Series and the Arab Classic. The league said next season will include more games, improved broadcast production, stronger competition and a wider programme of community activity.
Further details on the 2026 season are expected later this year.
