FIRST LOOK: New artisan deli, Providore 1885, opens inside historic 140-year-old fort

A new venue has officially opened inside the historic Fort Largs along the coast near Port Adelaide, bringing back the nostalgic charm of a corner deli, but with a modern, artisan twist.

Providore 1885 is made for the no rush mornings, slow sunny afternoons and carries the same spirit as the corner deli you’d visit as a kid – with $5 in your back pocket from mum.

For owner, Cindy Nguyen this was a life-long dream, come to life.

“To me, food is culture, it creates connection and it’s how we show care,” Cindy told Glam Adelaide.

“Growing up, my sisters and I would walk to the local corner deli with the exact change Mum gave us and the owners knew us and would sometimes sneak in a little lolly.

“It was that feeling, familiarity, being known, having a place in your neighbourhood, that really stayed with me.

“When those corner stores started disappearing, I remember thinking, ‘One day, I want to have one.’”

Set within the striking red-brick arches of the 140-year-old fort, the courtyard at Providore 1885 is already welcoming prams, bikes, furry companions at your feet and plenty of long coffee catch-ups.

Right now, it’s all about the artisan coffee freshly brewed Kindred Coffee and decadent cakes by Nature’s Basket ADL, but they’re also bringing a curated selection of grazing boards. Think cheese-focused, charcuterie-focused, seafood options, and even eventually flow into customisable.

The fridge display will slowly fill with artisan favourites like olives, small-batch chilli oils, specialty cheeses, fresh breads and crackers.

“I want food to feel like a playground of flavour and texture, a space where people can mix, match, share and discover combinations together,” Cindy shared.

The location is part of what makes the venue incredibly special, for Cindy. “Fort Largs has so much history, from its military beginnings to the police academy years, and people who visit often share their memories of the place.”

“There’s something really soulful about that.”

Providore 1885 might just be Adelaide’s next hidden (not-so hidden now) coastal gem.
