“One Battle Another” won big at the 2026 Oscars Sunday night, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s film capping off a very successful awards season by winning Best Picture at the 98th Academy Awards.
“One Battle” took home six awards in total, with the Warner Bros. film also winning Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and the first-ever Oscar for Best Casting.
Accepting the Academy’s top prize, Anderson was effusive in honoring his fellow Best Picture nominees.
“I just want to say that in 1975, the Best Picture nominees were ‘Dog Day Afternoon,’One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,’ ‘Jaws,’ ‘Nashville,’ and ‘Barry Lyndon,’ Anderson said. “There is no best among them, there is just what the mood might be that day. But we’re happy to be part of this wonderful, wonderful journey.”
Throughout awards season, “One Battle After Another” faced close competition from “Sinners,” Ryan Coogler’s Depression-era blues drama. At the 2026 Oscars, “Sinners” wasn’t far behind, notching four total Oscar wins for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Score, and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan.
“I stand here because of the people that came before me — Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith,” Jordan said in his acceptance speech. “And to be up amongst those giants, amongst those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my guys, thank you everybody in this room and everybody at home supporting me over my career.”
