Neighbourhood favourite the Kensington Hotel (the Kensi), is undergoing an exciting transformation, delivering a significant refresh across its restaurant, wine bar and function spaces. The spaces have a Hamptons-inspired aesthetic that will be brighter and more inviting.
The new renovations, set to be complete in June, are currently being conducted with the hotel closing section-by-section allowing trade to continue. Once complete, the redesign will enhance the overall flow and functionality of the hotel, ensuring it caters seamlessly to everything from relaxed long lunches and casual drinks to private functions and milestone celebrations.
The pub was last renovated in 2017, when small changes were made to the main bar. Before that, the last major renovations were in 2012.
Hotel Manager of the Kensi, Chris Eitzen, said the new look will be more than just a colour change. “It’s going to be a fresh lighter look for us. The colours we currently have are a bit darker, and they suited the times, but now we’re going for a lighter look, with more natural colours,” he said.
“Now we wanted something lighter, a bit brighter, and a more open space feel about it, which is a more modern take on things.”
An exciting addition will be the currently unnamed lounge-style bar, with a relaxed vibe, comfortable seating options and different food options. Out are the uncomfortable high-chair seating; this new space will have lounge seats facing west, which will allow more light to come in.
While the renovation signals a new chapter for the Kensi, Chris said it will still honour the character and familiarity locals value.
“The goal is to refresh and elevate the space while keeping the personality our regulars know and love. We’re creating a lighter, more welcoming environment that works just as well for everyday dining as it does for special occasions,” Chris said.
The old building charm that has kept the Kensi so popular will not be gone either. Chris said the Corner Bar still fits that sense of nostalgia, and in the new build, they’re going to tie it all together.
“We’re going to have some of the original brickwork in the new build. We’re going to expose some of that brick, which has been covered up for a while. We just want to get that to tie in with the new area.”
Once complete, the Kensi will see the addition of a new private boardroom, a revitalised alfresco area and a striking new skylight designed to flood the venue with natural light. A revamped wine display and additional windows will further open up the space, enhancing the sense of warmth and airiness throughout.
The exciting new chapter for the Kensi will be complete in June, but whilst the transformation is being completed, doors are still open for the usual times.
