The reports are set to explore what changes may be needed to improve health outcomes for the nearly 10 million Australians living in regional areas.

Jaynie Seal, Sky News Regional Correspondent, said the series highlights the growing urgency around healthcare access outside metropolitan areas.

“With approximately one in three people living away from our major capital cities, I am hearing from locals and government that it is crucial that the health service issues facing these communities are addressed and solutions are found that bridge the gaps to improve the health outcomes for those living in regional and rural Australia.”

The first report focuses on the Queensland town of Chinchilla, around three hours west of Brisbane, where an energy driven boom has seen the population double in the past two decades while local health services face mounting strain.

Seal speaks with community leaders including former Nationals leader David Littleproud, Callide MP Bryson Head and Western Downs Regional Mayor Andrew Smith about the pressures facing the town and potential solutions.

The new series State of Health premieres Saturday 14 March at 3.30pm AEDT on Sky News Australia.
