Adelaide is set for a warm and sunny weekend before a wet start to the new week, as a trough moving across South Australia brings widespread showers and rain from Monday.
High pressure sitting south of the state will keep conditions mostly settled across Adelaide through Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will be sunny with a top of 29 degrees in the city and around 30 degrees in northern suburbs like Elizabeth, while coastal areas such as Glenelg will reach about 28 degrees.
Easterly winds will bring comfortable conditions through the morning before sea breezes develop later in the day. The Mount Lofty Ranges are sitting at a High fire danger rating, and with the UV Index expected to reach 9, sun protection is recommended between 10am and 4:50pm.
Sunday will stay mostly sunny, but temperatures will climb a little higher, reaching around 32 degrees in the city. Winds will shift from easterly in the morning to southwesterly during the day before easing again later in the afternoon.
While Adelaide enjoys the sunshine, weather conditions will begin shifting elsewhere in South Australia. Showers and the chance of thunderstorms are expected across parts of the north and west during Sunday as a trough moves in from Western Australia.
That system will reach Adelaide on Monday, bringing cloudy skies and a very high chance of showers. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting rainfall totals between 2 and 15 millimetres for the city, with temperatures dropping to a cooler top of around 26 degrees.
The trough will bring more significant rainfall further north, with some areas of the state expecting heavy falls and possible thunderstorms. Rainfall totals could reach between 50 and 100 millimetres in parts of the far northwest, with isolated totals potentially exceeding 100 millimetres.
Showers will ease across Adelaide by Tuesday morning, leaving partly cloudy skies and a top of around 27 degrees. Conditions will then stabilise through the middle of the week as high pressure returns.
From Wednesday onwards Adelaide can expect mostly sunny weather again, with daytime temperatures hovering around the high twenties and reaching 30 degrees by Friday.
Further north, flood warnings remain in place for inland rivers including the Warburton River and Cooper Creek near Innamincka, where elevated river levels and upstream flooding from Queensland are continuing to affect the region. A separate flood watch has also been issued for parts of the north-west and central catchments from Monday as the incoming system brings widespread rainfall.
Authorities are reminding travellers to check road conditions before heading into remote areas, with some roads and river crossings already affected by flooding.
Overall, Adelaide residents can expect a classic late-summer pattern over the coming days, with warm sunshine through the weekend followed by a cooler, showery start to the week before conditions clear again.
The latest marine forecast for Adelaide waters shows relatively calm conditions over the next few days, with winds generally below 15 knots and seas remaining under one metre.
