Mike Felger’s updated menu after Morgan Geekie’s milestone goal: Amid the Bruins‘ 6-3 defeat against the Predators on Thursday was a notable personal moment for Boston center Morgan Geekie.
The 27-year-old rifled a one-timer into the upper corner of the net for a power-play goal in the second period (an impressive-looking shot on replay). It was Geekie’s 34th goal of the season, a new career-high. It was also the threshold for a seemingly forgotten line delivered months ago by 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Michael Felger.

The co-host of “Felger & Mazz” had expressed his doubts about Geekie’s goal-scoring capacity in a characteristic exchange during an October segment. Speaking with co-host Tony Massarotti, Felger delivered a typically bellicose critique of Geekie’s projected season stats.
“He’s not a high-end offensive player,” Felger said of Geekie. “He’s not. He got 33 goals last year, contract year. He’s just not that guy.”
“I’m not expecting much from Morgan Geekie,” Felger added. The comments came on Oct. 9, one day after the Bruins’ season-opening 3-1 win over the Capitals (a game in which Geekie scored and logged an assist). However, responding to a caller’s assessment that Geekie had missed an clear-cut goal-scoring chance, Felger concurred.
It led to the following exchange with Massarotti:
Massarotti: [Athletic writer] Fluto Shinzawa did like an eight predictions for the Bruins thing, did you see this?
Felger: No.
Massarotti: One of them was that Geekie would actually get better, not worse.
Felger: Not statistically. If he scores 34 goals, I’ll eat my hat.
Massarotti: I’ll feed it to you.
The two moved on quickly after that, switching seamlessly to a caller’s comments about Bill Belichick.
However, following Geekie’s goal on Thursday, Sports Hub producer Kevin Maggiore shared a reminder of the moment on social media.
“Felger gotta eat a hat!” Maggiore declared. Of course, it remains to be seen how serious the promised hat snack will be. As Sports Hub Bruins writer Ty Anderson quipped, “I’m not sure how official any of these declarations are, to be honest.”
As for Geekie, his reaction to the goal was understandably muted given the defeat.
“Our power play has struggled the last couple games, and it was nice to see one go in,” Geekie said, per NHL.com correspondent Robby Stanley. “I don’t know, we just got away from our game too much. It’s tough to find momentum and things when you know you’re not doing them the best way that you can. It’s just one of those games where we got away too quickly, didn’t get back.”
Trivia: According NHL Stats, only two other Bruins (besides Geekie) have scored 34 goals in 60 games or less over the past three decades. Can you name them?
