An Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a routine training mission, the force said. The aircraft had lost radar contact shortly after taking off from Jorhat on Thursday evening.
The aircraft went down in a hilly area of Karbi Anglong, around 60 km from Jorhat airbase.
“The Su-30MKI which was on a training mission crashed in the area of Karbi Anglong, approx 60 km from Jorhat. Search operations are underway,” the IAF said in a statement.

Earlier, the Air Force had reported that the fighter jet was overdue after losing contact during the mission. The aircraft was last in communication with ground control at 7.42 pm.
There is no official confirmation yet on the condition of the pilots onboard the twin-seat fighter jet. Authorities said efforts are underway to locate the crew and assess the situation on the ground.

Inducted into the Air Force in the early 2000s, the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI is considered one of the most capable frontline combat aircraft.
The IAF currently has a fleet of more that 200 Sukhoi jets.
