Ongoing War Could Disrupt Global Energy Routes, Raise Logistics Costs: Commerce Minister

Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan said the ongoing war situation in the region is affecting the entire trade corridor and could disrupt global energy supply routes and increase logistics costs.

Speaking to the media outside Parliament in Islamabad on Thursday, the commerce minister said the conflict was impacting the whole region as it forms part of a major international trade route. He noted that Gulf countries serve as a critical energy supply corridor for many nations.

Jam Kamal said countries dependent on energy resources from the Gulf region could face repercussions due to the prevailing tensions. He added that the region previously enjoyed smooth movement of goods and shipments, but the situation was now beginning to affect logistics operations.

The minister said the cost of insurance and logistics had started to rise, which could negatively impact trade and shipping operations. “Some effects related to container risk, insurance, and other logistical expenses have already begun to appear,” he added.

Referring to Pakistan’s energy supplies, Jam Kamal said liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Qatar would continue to arrive from the same source. However, he noted that alternative fuel options were also available if needed.

He further stated that shipping lines responsible for Pakistan’s imports and exports would have to ensure continuity of trade operations. While some alternative arrangements could be made to mitigate the impact, the minister acknowledged that certain factors were beyond Pakistan’s control.

Jam Kamal reiterated that the government was closely monitoring the situation and its potential implications for regional trade and supply chains.
