Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has said that Andhra Pradesh has secured the sixth position in the country in organ donation, according to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in its State-wise organ donation report for 2025.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister attributed the achievement to sustained awareness campaigns conducted across the State under the Jeevandan scheme since its launch in 2015.
The number of hospitals performing organ transplant surgeries has risen from three to nine. They include King George Hospital and VIMS in Visakhapatnam, Government General Hospitals in Guntur, Kurnool and Vijayawada, SVIMS in Tirupati, AIIMS in Mangalagiri, Padmavathi Children’s Hospital in Tirupati, and the Kidney Research Centre and Super Speciality Hospital in Palasa.
At a review meeting, Jeevandan Trust coordinator K. Rambabu informed the Minister that necessary permissions have been granted to hospitals in Kakinada, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Ongole, Anantapur, Kadapa and Tirupati for organ retrieval and transportation from brain-dead patients. The Minister directed officials to further increase the number of transplants in government hospitals.
Officials said that this year eight kidney transplants and one liver transplant have been performed using organs from brain-dead donors at government hospitals, including KGH and VIMS in Visakhapatnam, and the Government General Hospitals in Guntur and Kurnool. A heart transplant was also performed at a private hospital in Vijayawada.
Organs retrieved from 18 brain-dead donors have helped 64 patients in the first two months of this year. In the corresponding period last year, 31 transplants were carried out with organs from 12 donors. In 2024, 30 transplants were performed with support from 10 brain-dead donors.
Since the scheme began in 2015, as many as 1,200 patients have benefited from Jeevandan. In 2025 alone, 301 patients have received organ transplants so far.
According to the Jeevandan Trust, many patients awaiting transplants are in the 20 to 50 age group. A total of 5,347 people are currently registered for various organ transplants, including 38 children below nine years.
Under G.O. 95, the State government accords State honours to organ donors and provides financial assistance of ₹10,000 to their families. The Minister said the government is considering enhancing the assistance to ₹1 lakh.
