From FAO negotiations to fashion runways, the people-centered envoy elevates Haiti through strategic partnerships and symbolic visibility
Rome, Italy – March 3, 2026 In an era when diplomacy increasingly extends beyond traditional negotiations into the realms of culture, identity, public presence, and creative advocacy, Haiti’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Italy, Gandy Thomas, stands out as a dynamic and multifaceted representative of his nation.
Accredited in May 2025, Ambassador Thomas also serves as Haiti’s Permanent Representative to the Rome-based United Nations agencies focused on food and agriculture: the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). In these roles, he plays a central part in global discussions on food security, sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, and humanitarian coordination — priorities made even more urgent by Haiti’s ongoing challenges with gang violence, displacement, and economic strain.
With more than three decades in international service, Ambassador Thomas joined Haiti’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991. He served in various capacities at embassies in Chile, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, and elsewhere before his current posting in Italy. Holding a Master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy, he has cultivated a people-centered diplomatic style that emphasizes genuine partnerships and measurable impact.
Beyond conference rooms and formal negotiations, Ambassador Thomas actively advances tangible bilateral cooperation between Italy and Haiti in critical areas: reforestation, rural development, renewable energy, and food system transformation. At the same time, he champions cultural and creative initiatives to elevate Haiti’s voice and visibility on the global stage.
A standout example of this approach is his collaboration with acclaimed Italian-Haitian fashion designer Stella Jean. Their partnership has spotlighted Haiti through innovative designs for the national team’s uniforms at major international events, most recently the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. These uniforms — the only hand-painted outfits at the Games — carry intentional symbolism of heritage, strength, and resilience, blending Haitian artistic traditions with functional athletic wear.
For Ambassador Thomas, style is never superficial; it serves as a form of communication, symbolism, and a mark of respect toward platforms and audiences. His own refined, fashion-forward presence has earned recognition in diplomatic circles, while his promotion of sports diplomacy and youth empowerment reflects a belief in sport as a universal language that provides international exposure for young Haitian talents.
As Haiti navigates a complex transition and security crisis, Ambassador Thomas continues to build bridges — whether through policy advocacy at FAO, WFP, and IFAD or through creative cultural projects that project Haiti’s dignity and potential worldwide.
L’Union Suite salutes Ambassador Gandy Thomas for his innovative, inclusive approach to representing Haiti. Diplomacy with heart and vision is exactly what the moment demands.
