The arrested employee, an educator and basketball coach with the district, was placed on leave in the wake of the allegations.
An educator and basketball coach with Malden Public Schools was arrested and charged with rape Wednesday, court records indicate.
Scott Marino was arrested in connection with an alleged “serious incident” involving a Malden High School student, Superintendent Timothy Sippel said in a statement Wednesday.
The superintendent did not provide any details about the alleged incident or list any charges against Marino. However, he confirmed that Marino was “immediately placed on leave” and that the alleged incident “occurred outside of working hours.”
Marino is facing two counts of rape, one count of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over, and one count of selling liquor to a person under 21, records from Woburn District Court show.
Marino is an educator at the Linden School, also known as the Linden STEAM Academy, which serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. He is also head coach for the girls’ basketball team at Malden High, according to Sippel.
Malden police first informed the school district Feb. 19 that Marino was being investigated and the district placed him on leave, Sippel said in an initial statement Sunday that did not identify Marino by name.
Marino was arrested by Stoneham police, according to Sippel. The charges were filed Wednesday.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office is presiding over the case, and the school district has asked that all questions be directed to prosecutors at 781-897-8300. The district said it is declining to comment further due to “personnel and privacy laws.”
“I understand how upsetting and distressing this is to our community given the serious nature of these allegations,” Sippel said in Wednesday’s statement. “We thank you for your continued commitment to our students and our district community. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority.”
Attorney information for Marino was not publicly available Wednesday night.
