Police said the small dog was found severely injured in a snowbank outside an apartment complex.
A 25-year-old Milford man was arrested Saturday for allegedly throwing a small dog off a balcony while he was intoxicated.
The Milford Public Safety Communications Center received a 911 call at 2:39 a.m. reporting a possible disturbance at the Oak Ridge Apartments on Pheasant Circle, according to a Facebook post from the Milford Police Department. The caller reported that a dog may have been thrown from a balcony.
When officers arrived, they found a small gray dog severely injured and partially buried in a snowbank beneath the apartment, police said.
Officers began administering medical aid to the animal while additional units responded to the apartment, according to the department.
In the residence, officers found significant damage throughout the unit and located Alex De Oliveira, 25, of Milford, hiding in the bathroom, police said.
“De Oliveira appeared visibly upset and showed signs of intoxication,” police wrote in the post.
Investigators determined De Oliveira was alone in the apartment and had apparently become upset during a phone conversation with someone, police said.
He was taken into custody at 3:31 a.m. and charged with animal cruelty, disturbing the peace, and vandalizing property, according to police. De Oliveira was later released on $5,000 bail.
The injured dog was transported to Tufts Animal Hospital in Grafton for treatment, police said.
“This is a senseless, inexcusable attack on a defenseless animal,” said Milford Chief of Police Robert Tusino. “The depravity of some individuals is beyond comprehension to those of us who consider animals part of our family.”
