Studio khara has shared a video for the new Evangelion series that was announced recently at the EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION event.
The cryptic video features shots of a post-apocalyptic structure with music instruments within the premises, eerie animated footage of an Evangelion, and a somber soundtrack that wouldn’t sound out of place in the sci-fi action RPG NieR:Automata (one of the game’s composers, Keiichi Okabe, is on music duty for the new Evangelion show).
As previously reported, the project is a Studio khara and CloverWorks co-production that features series composition and scripts by Yoko Taro, who has worked on games like NieR:Automata (director), Drakengard 3 (creative director), and SINoALICE (creator and creative director).
Additionally, it will be co-directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX and FLCL; Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time co-director; Neon Genesis Evangelion co-assistant director) and Toko Yatabe (Evangelion: 3.0 (-46h), Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time co-assistant director, The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe character designer).
The original Neon Genesis Evangelion TV anime, which was created and directed by Hideaki Anno, began broadcasting in 1995. The show took place in a post-apocalyptic future and saw teenager Shinji Ikari forced into battle against the unsettling Angels as an Evangelion pilot. It was followed by the movie Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (mostly a recap with some new content) and The End of Evangelion (an alternate ending to the series), and also spawned other media like manga, video games, and a novel series.
A decade after The End of Evangelion, a new movie tetralogy debuted and finally concluded in 2021 with Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, the current 49th highest-grossing film in Japan.
The 90s Evangelion entries were produced at the now-defunct Gainax and are available on Netflix (instead of Death & Rebirth, the streaming platform has Evangelion: Death (True)², an updated version of Death & Rebirth‘s recap content). khara produced the newer Evangelion movies, which are on Prime Video.
