Built on the grassroots lunchtime grind of tradies and hungry faces searching for the best banh mi in their area, Nammi has grown from its humble first location in Tonsley to the brink of opening a third site.
For its third Adelaide location, the Vietnamese eatery is set to land on Grote Street in late March, bringing their banh mi, pho, Vietnamese coffee and more to the rush of the city centre.
Behind the growing brand is owner Hoang Nguyen, whose journey into hospitality started not in a commercial kitchen, but at home. Cooking has long been central to family life, with meals regularly shared at school events and community gatherings. The food was often met with enthusiastic feedback from staff and other families.
As word got out, and Nguyen began to share his food to broader circles, it evolved into a business idea, eventually leading to the first Nammi shop opening on Sturt Road in Tonsley. Nguyen tells us the shop’s popularity was “built on the incredible support of locals, healthcare workers, tradies and office workers in the area.”
“As time passed, many of the original customers relocated closer to Richmond and the CBD, which naturally aligned with their vision to expand into those areas,” Nguyen explains. That momentum carried Nammi to its second site on Richmond Road in Marleston, and now into Adelaide’s city centre.
“Without that community behind, this growth wouldn’t have been possible.”
The upcoming Grote Street venue marks the brand’s most central location yet, opening the door for a new batch of customers to drop in for anything from a quick lunch to a casual dinner.
“The most exciting thing is being able to welcome both loyal returning customers and new patrons in a more central, vibrant location,” Nguyen says. “Opening in the CBD allows more people to experience Nammi’s food, whether they’re stopping by for a quick lunch, a relaxed dinner, or a casual catch-up with friends.”
The menu will stay grounded in Vietnamese street-food traditions, featuring banh mi, noodle and salad bowls, cold rolls, pho noodle soup and Vietnamese iced coffee.
At Nammi’s Richmond location, the menu gives a clear glimpse of what you can likely expect from the new spot. Think crisp, flavour-packed banh mi, generous bun bowls and comforting pho built for the lunchtime rush. Classics include the crispy crackling pork banh mi layered with pickled veg and herbs, lemongrass chicken bun bowls piled with vermicelli, salad and fried shallots, and rich, slow-simmered beef pho. Cold rolls, rice bowls and combo meal deals round things out.
The space itself has been built from the ground up, a comfortable interior where food takes top priority.
“We have built an entirely new shopfront and kitchen. The space has been thoughtfully designed to feel warm, cosy and inviting. We’re aiming for a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere with simple, comfortable and focused on good food done well. It will be a place where customers can enjoy our dishes at any time of the day, whether that’s breakfast, lunch or dinner.”
Nammi’s third location is expected to open in late March on Grote Street in Adelaide’s CBD, with trading hours planned from morning through to evening on weekdays and shorter daytime hours on weekends.
