If you love the quiet theatre of a truly special omakase experience, you’ll know Ibuki Sushi. It’s the kind of place where you sit back, watch the chef work with absolute precision, and suddenly realise most other sushi just won’t cut it anymore.
Now, the team behind Ibuki is bringing that same care and intention to something a little more casual, with the opening of Ibuki Komeya in Parkside.
This new spot is all about onigiri and bento boxes, the everyday heroes of Japanese food culture. Think perfectly cooked rice, beautifully balanced flavours, and combinations that feel simple but deeply satisfying. Bento boxes in Japan are everywhere, and for good reason. They’re comforting, practical, and packed with variety, from grilled salmon and karaage to pickled and cooked vegetables.
Ibuki Komeya will also be serving up handmade sweet treats, made with the same dedication that’s earned the original restaurant such a loyal following. It’s shaping up to be an easy go-to for lunch, ideal for grabbing something delicious on the run. Pair it with a matcha or a filter coffee and you’re set.
“This is lunchbox and mainly takeaway, the bento box will be pre-packed and people can come and grab it,” says head chef and owner Yohei Hombo.
Yohei also said that the bento boxes are very traditional Japanese and are served not hot but at a nice cooler temperature.
The soft opening kicks off on Saturday, 21 February at 1 George Street, Parkside, and the excitement from the team is palpable. They shared on social media that the space has been months in the making, with late nights and thoughtful details tucked into every corner. To start, they’ll be running a limited menu while they settle into their rhythm.
“Thank you for supporting us from the beginning. We truly can’t wait to share this space with our community,” they said on socials.
Of course, the heart of Ibuki remains its omakase experience, meticulously prepared by Yohei Hombo. Dining there is a front-row seat to Japanese craftsmanship at its finest, with perfectly seasoned rice, melt-in-your-mouth seafood, delicate garnishes, and flavours that shift with the seasons. Every bite feels considered, timed, and memorable.
It’s intimate. It’s refined. It’s the kind of experience you save for a celebration, or for those nights when you just want to treat yourself.
And now, with Ibuki Komeya, those same flavours are being reimagined in a relaxed, lunchbox-friendly way, proving that even the simplest meals can feel a little bit special.
