Warriors guard Stephen Curry will not play Thursday night against the Celtics, according to the team’s injury report.
Curry has not played since Jan. 30 after being sidelined with a knee injury. He has missed 16 games this season. The Warriors are 6-10 without him this year.
Curry has been dealing with runner’s knee, a common overuse injury. Leading up to the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr had expressed some optimism that the pain and swelling might decrease to the point where Curry would be able to play against the Celtics.
But, according to ESPN, Curry told Golden State’s training staff that the knee wasn’t ready. He missed Golden State’s last five games before the All-Star break and wants to be sure that the issue is handled properly before returning to the court.
“You have to try to get rid of all the inflammation and pain,” Curry said. “It’s something we still have to monitor and injury-manage, but it’s something where, if I come back too early, it could flare up.”
Kerr said there’s a chance Curry could get an MRI after consulting with a doctor.
Curry is averaging 27.2 points per game and shooting 39.1 percent from the field this season. He will turn 38 next month and is in his 17th NBA season.
The Warriors have gone 2-3 during the recent five-game stretch without Curry. The Celtics have won six of their last seven games.
This game against the Warriors opens a four-game road trip, primarily played on the West Coast. Boston will travel to Golden State, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Denver before returning home to TD Garden to host the Nets on Feb. 27.
With Curry out, the Warriors will be looking for a spark from former Celtic Krastaps Porzingis. Golden State acquired Porzingis in a trade with the Hawks two weeks ago, and Thursday night will be his Warriors debut. Longtime former Celtic Al Horford, who signed with Golden State in the offseason, is set to play.
