Barossa Valley Ice Cream Company lands Producer in Residence stall at Adelaide Central Market, but you need to be quick

If you’re anywhere near Adelaide Central Market this month, there’s a very cool reason to stop by. Barossa Valley Ice Cream Company has returned as Producer in Residence for a third time, scooping up small-batch favourites, but only until February 14.

Pictured in the header image is the Balsamic Roasted Strawberry ice cream, which is just one of the exquisite flavours on offer, alongside Rose Petal & White Chocolate, Blood Orange, Belgian Chocolate, Rum and Raisin, and heaps more.

Founded in November 2012 by Julie Donnellan, the Barossa-based business has built a loyal following for its small-batch frozen desserts made from whole, natural ingredients and traditional methods. Their philosophy is simple: start with quality produce, keep it local wherever possible, and let flavour lead the way.

The company sources fresh milk and pure cream locally, including from Jersey cows in Greenock and Fleurieu Milk Company, while fruits are carefully selected from South Australian growers. Citrus for their refreshing sorbets comes from the Riverland, and fresh strawberries are sourced from the nearby Adelaide Hills. Where ingredients can’t be sourced locally, they’re chosen for their traceability, sustainability, and quality, from organic vanilla beans to fair-trade single origin coffee and rich 72 per cent Belgian chocolate.

At the heart of the range are time-honoured recipes and traditional techniques. Their ice creams are crafted from a classic base of whole milk, cream, sugar, and fresh egg yolks, resulting in a rich, creamy texture that has earned multiple gold medals at the South Australian Dairy Awards. The company has also taken home the coveted Championship Trophy for its standout salty caramel flavour.

Alongside the indulgent ice creams, you can also explore the company’s vibrant sorbet selection, made from fruit, sugar, and a small amount of plant-based gums. Every ice cream is gluten-free, while the sorbets are gluten-free, lactose-free, and vegan.

Over the past decade, the Barossa Valley Ice Cream Company has grown from market beginnings into a familiar sight across South Australia. Their products can be found at Barossa supermarkets, cafes, caravan parks, wineries, breweries, even Adelaide Airport. Their fleet of ice cream bikes and vans has appeared at festivals, country shows, corporate events, Gluttony at Adelaide Fringe, and WOMADelaide.

Now, for a limited time, the team is back in the city, serving up award-winning scoops and refreshing sorbets at the Adelaide Central Market. With summer still in full swing, it’s the perfect excuse to cool down, support local producers, and discover why this Barossa favourite continues to win fans one scoop at a time.

The Adelaide Central Market is always bustling with life, delectable aromas in the air, and plenty that you won’t have seen on the last visit. The Producer in Residence stall celebrates that dynamic offering, bringing in a fantastic local producer each month, and at this point it’s always a banger. The team at Adelaide Central Market tell us they have another very exciting maker locked in for the next Producer in Residence. Stay tuned!
