Northern Italy’s railway system has been targeted in what authorities believe were coordinated sabotage attacks, causing significant disruption as the Winter Olympic Games got underway.
Police are investigating three distinct incidents affecting rail infrastructure, which they suspect are linked to the sporting event.
The attacks triggered delays reaching up to two and a half hours for passengers travelling through the affected region.
Thousands of spectators had gathered for the Games’ opening when the incidents occurred, with investigators now examining damage to multiple sites across the network.
No group has yet come forward to claim responsibility for the suspected attacks.
Rail infrastructure between Bologna and Venice was struck by fire, which investigators believe was deliberately started at a track switch close to Pesaro on the Adriatic coastline.
Hours after this initial incident, officers discovered that electrical cables had been cut in the vicinity of Bologna.

A crude explosive device was also found positioned beside the tracks in a nearby location.
Bologna serves as a crucial junction for Italy’s rail network, connecting routes running north to south and east to west across the country.
The state-operated high-speed service through the city was forced to suspend operations temporarily following the attacks.

Italy’s Ministry of Transport has described the incidents as “serious sabotage”, drawing parallels with attacks that disrupted France’s high-speed rail network during the Paris Summer Olympics in 2024.
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini addressed the situation directly, stating: “These actions of unprecedented seriousness do not in any way tarnish Italy’s image in the world, an image that the Games will make even more compelling and positive.”
Speaking to AFP, Salvini noted: “There are similarities in action and timing to the French incident.”
A police spokesman confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with no individual or organisation having claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Services through Bologna’s high-speed station were returning to normal by Saturday afternoon, following the temporary closure.

The Winter Olympics opening ceremony was held on Friday evening across four venues, including Milan and Cortina in the northeastern part of the country.
Both Milan and Cortina can be reached by rail from Venice, making the transport network particularly vital during the Games.
Sporting events are taking place across a vast area spanning hundreds of miles throughout northern Italy, with competitions hosted in the Alps and Dolomite mountain ranges.
The Winter Olympics will run from February 6 to February 22.
