On Sunday, the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning faced off in a game that was unique for multiple reasons. For one, it was at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium. This year’s Stadium Series, however, marked the farthest south the annual event has gone since its inception in 2014 — the series has gone to Los Angeles, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Nashville, Tennessee, but never to the Sunshine State.
Fittingly, the weather in Tampa brought conditions fit for hockey (or as close as you’ll get in Florida). The forecast included temperatures hovering around the high 30 degrees Fahrenheit, cold enough that the ice needed to be heated up by the NHL beginning in warmups and throughout the game.
The game also featured the first goalie fight in outdoor game history when Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy and Boston’s Jeremy Swayman dropped the gloves at center ice in the second period.
From themed pregame outfits to shots of a rink sitting under Raymond James Stadium’s pirate ship, there were plenty of sights ahead of the Bruins and Lightning’s first faceoff. The Lightning erased a four-goal deficit and completed the largest comeback in an outdoor NHL game, winning in a shootout.
