Former Australian cricketer and former Pakistan red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie is reportedly set to become the head coach of the Pakistan Super League’s newest franchise, Hyderabad.
The development was first reported by a local sports journalist on social media and was later retweeted by Gillespie on his official account, lending credibility to the reports.
Gillespie, a former Australian international fast bowler, has an extensive coaching background that includes stints in county cricket and domestic leagues. He was appointed head coach of Pakistan’s men’s Test team in April 2024 by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
However, he stepped down from the role in December 2024 following disagreements with PCB management. His tenure was marked by behind-the-scenes tensions, with Gillespie later publicly criticizing the board over communication breakdowns and decision-making processes.
During his time with Pakistan, Gillespie also briefly served as interim head coach of the limited-overs team after Gary Kirsten’s departure in 2024.
Gillespie’s move marks his return to Pakistan cricket in a franchise role, just months after his departure from the national team setup.
Launched by the PCB in 2016, the Pakistan Super League is considered one of the leading T20 leagues globally and regularly features top international and domestic players. The league has also attracted several high-profile overseas coaches and support staff over the years.
The 11th edition of the PSL, scheduled to begin on March 26, will be a historic one, as the tournament expands to eight teams for the first time. Hyderabad and Sialkot have joined the league as the two new franchises.
Hyderabad is owned by Fawad Sarwar and secured its place in the league by winning the franchise auction with a bid of Rs 1.75 billion ($6,247,500).
