Beat Diabetes returns to Zabeel Park on February 8

Landmark Group will stage the 16th edition of its Beat Diabetes Family Event on Sunday, February 8, at Zabeel Park in Dubai.

The event opens the UAE’s Year of the Family calendar with a focus on diabetes prevention, early testing and everyday activity. It is backed by Dubai Sports Council, Al Jalila Foundation, Emirates Health Services, with Lions Clubs International Middle East as volunteering partner and GEMS Education as school partner.

Beat Diabetes began in 2009 and has since drawn more than 165,000 participants across the Gulf. Its message remains straightforward: take the test, eat well and stay active.

This year’s programme centres on a two-kilometre community walk at Zabeel Park, alongside family activities through the morning. Organisers have planned free blood glucose testing and health checks, vaccinations, fitness sessions for adults and children, and a larger kids’ zone. Healthy food options and live entertainment are also scheduled.

Children will again take part in the Superkidz programme, which includes educational activities and a writing competition run with GEMS Education. Winners will be announced on the day.

The Middle East remains one of the regions most affected by diabetes, with close to one in six adults living with the condition. All proceeds from registrations and in-store donations across Landmark Group’s UAE outlets will go to Al Jalila Foundation to support diabetes research and treatment.

Nisha Jagtiani, group director at Landmark Group, said the event continues to focus on habits formed at home. She said:

“Our aim is to involve families and children early, and to work with partners to support healthier communities.”

Saeed Mohammed Hareb, secretary-general of the Dubai Sports Council, said the event had become a fixture on the city’s community calendar. He said:

“It brings people together through movement, education and prevention. Physical activity plays a clear role in long-term health.”

Dr Amer Al Zarooni, chief executive of Al Jalila Foundation, said support raised through the event helps fund research and care for people living with diabetes.
