Netflix and MAPPA are forming a strategic partnership that will see the streamer and the Japanese animation studio collaborating on “new projects with a global perspective — from story development to merchandise —,” as well as Netflix becoming the exclusive destination for “MAPPA’s new anime titles.”
Netflix says that those titles will debut “simultaneously” on its platform, and that “multiple new anime projects are now in planning and production.”
The streamer currently has more than 15 MAPPA-produced titles in its catalog, including the currently airing Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3: The Culling Game Part 1 and Hell’s Paradise Season 2. Of these, the Ranma 1/2 and The Rose of Versailles remakes, Dorohedoro, Yasuke, Maboroshi, Kakegurui, Kakegurui Twin are Netflix streaming exclusives (in Japan, the Ranma 1/2 remake was a timed exclusive).
Back in 2020, Netflix announced “production line partnerships” with MAPPA, Science SARU, NAZ, and Studio Mir, after previously inking similar deals with Production I.G, BONES, Anima, Sublimation, and David Production in the two preceding years. According to MAPPA president and CEO Manabu Otsuka, the newly revealed “expanded partnership is based on MAPPA’s core belief in being an independent studio — both creatively and in business. Japanese animation studios must proactively lead every stage, from understanding global audience needs and developing projects, to reaching viewers and expanding related businesses.”
As of 2026, Netflix claims that over half of its members “enjoy anime on the service,” and that the last five years have seen its anime viewership increase threefold.
