Concord Baptist Church, a historic Black church, was once located on the corner of Warren Street and West Brookline Street in the South End.
In a 2024 Globe article, Sammie Banks, an Alabama native who joined the church in 1965 recalled how the congregation would linger well after the final prayer, chatting over meals about whatever and whoever. There was no rush; most of them lived a few minutes’ walk from the chapel, anyway.

Built in 1868, the large brick building was left by the congregation in 2011 for a new home in Milton. Developer Peter Zagorianakos converted the former church into nine luxurious condominiums. But at the urging of the South End Landmark Commission, the exterior was left intact, in recognition of its historic value.
Now the building’s most spectacular unit, a two-story penthouse that includes the cupola, is for sale for $7,990,000 and being shown off-market. The 3,508-square-foot home was purchased as rough, unbuilt space by the current owners who engaged renowned Acton builders Kistler and Knapp to create a dramatic residence to their custom specifications. With three bedrooms and three and a half baths, this unit has direct elevator access from the street level entry, as well as an elevator between its two floors. There is also direct elevator access to that most coveted Boston home feature: two full parking spaces in the heated basement garage.

“It’s a unique Boston property,” said Beth Mina George who, along with Joshua Golden, is listing the condominium as representatives of Back Bay’s Luxury Residential Group. “There aren’t other homes with this kind of space, these kinds of modern amenities, the custom millwork, all in a historic envelope in the middle of a sought-after neighborhood. From here, you can walk all over the South End and Back Bay. And those views.”
The entry to unit 401 on the fourth floor is accessed via 201 West Brookline St. The mud room/foyer, which includes specially-designed cabinetry for shoes and coats, leads into a dramatic double-height Great Room; wooden ceiling slats add warmth while making the space more acoustically comfortable. This lower level of the home includes two guest rooms with ensuite marble baths, a spacious laundry room, a half bath, and a dramatic staircase leading to the upper level.

The upstairs space is eight-sided, crowned by the cupola and its 360-degree views. An open floor plan encompasses the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Also on this level are the primary bedroom and bath and a home office. There are two gas fireplaces, one in the living room and a smaller one in the primary bedroom.
The flooring is walnut, the arched neo-Gothic double-hung window frame surrounding the space are mahogany, and the kitchen cabinets are fashioned from tiger maple. The kitchen is designed for hard-working home chefs with a Wolf range, two Miele double wall ovens, and, hiding behind cabinetry, a Liebherr refrigerator.

The primary bedroom was designed to provide an unobstructed view of the Prudential Center. The adjoining spa bath features a deep soaking tub under a bank of windows, a long double-sink wall with luxurious levels of storage, a walk-in shower with multiple shower heads, and, as from every room, expansive city views. One example of thoughtful design is the motorized “luggage lift” leading to upper storage space in the primary closet.

Smart house technology includes electric window shades that disappear into the ceiling when not in use and invisible stereo speakers throughout.
