7 of the best Pacific Island destinations for your next vacation

With global travel feeling a little uncertain right now, many Australians are starting to rethink where they go next. Instead of committing to long, complicated journeys, there’s a growing appeal in heading somewhere closer to home that still feels like a proper overseas escape (or maybe you want to stay in the country but find a location that feels just like Europe).

That’s where the Pacific comes in. With some of these destinations just a few hours from Australia, these islands offer the kind of clear water, warm weather, and laid-back pace people are craving – without the stress of long-haul travel or re-routed flights. But it’s not just about the beaches (we have some pretty damn good ones at home). From local traditions to food, language, and unique landscapes, there’s a deep and genuine cultural experience to be had at each.

Whether it’s a quick getaway or something a bit more special, places like Fiji, Vanuatu, and the Cook Islands make it easy to switch off while still feeling like you’ve gone somewhere new. For Australians looking to reroute their next international holiday, here are the best Pacific Island destinations we’d recommend for your next vacation…

1. Bora Bora

Flight time from Australia: 16-22 hours (via Auckland)

It’s honestly hard not to fall in love with Bora Bora – it’s every bit as dreamy as it looks (and yes, even Keeping Up With The Kardashians couldn’t make it seem more luxurious than it already is). The island is surrounded by these incredible turquoise waters protected by coral reefs, so it’s perfect if you’re into scuba diving or just want calm, warm water to swim in (great for kids too). If you really want to treat yourself, staying in an overwater bungalow is a must – it’s such a unique experience waking up right above the lagoon. It’s definitely a bit of a trek from Australia (around 16-22 hours and usually with a stop-over in Auckland) and not the cheapest destination, but if you go outside the rainy season, it’s absolutely worth it for a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

2. Fiji

Flight time from Australia: 4-6.5 hours

If you’re dreaming of an easy tropical escape, Fiji is honestly hard to beat – especially between May and October when the weather is dry, sunny, and perfect for beach days (plus it’s manta ray season, so tours book out quickly – we’d suggest booking trips during these months well ahead of time). One of the most memorable experiences is exploring Vanua Levu’s hidden waterways with Savasi Island, where you glide past lush mangroves all the way to Savusavu’s peaceful Salt Lake – it feels completely untouched. Getting around is part of the adventure too, with island-hopping passes through the Yasawa and Mamanuca chains letting you mix relaxation, culture, and a bit of thrill at your own pace. Just pack light for the heat, bring some Fijian dollars for the outer islands, and maybe learn a few local phrases to help you connect.

3. Cook Islands

Flight time from Australia: 6-7 hours

If you’re after somewhere that still feels a bit under-the-radar but just as stunning as the bigger island destinations, the Cook Islands are such a good pick. Aitutaki’s lagoon is easily one of the most beautiful in the world – those unreal shades of blue don’t even look real in photos. Rarotonga is the main hub, but it’s super laid-back, easy to get around, and perfect if you want a mix of beach time and a bit of local culture. It’s also one of the more affordable options in the South Pacific, which makes it ideal if you still want that luxury feel without the Bora Bora price tag.

4. Vanuatu

Flight time from Australia: 3-4 hours

Vanuatu is such a great mix of adventure and relaxation – it’s not just about beaches here (although they’re stunning). You can literally watch an active volcano erupt at Mount Yasur, which is one of those bucket list experiences you won’t forget anytime soon. If you’re more into chilled vibes, Espiritu Santo has crystal-clear blue holes and some of the softest white sand beaches you’ll ever walk on. It’s also super close to Australia (around a 3-hour flight), making it perfect for a long weekend or a spontaneous getaway.

5. Samoa

Flight time from Australia: 5-6.5 hours

Samoa feels a little more raw and untouched compared to some of the more built-up island destinations, which is exactly why people love it. Think beach fales (traditional open-air huts) right on the sand, waterfalls hidden in lush jungle, and places like To Sua Ocean Trench that look like something out of a movie. It’s a great option if you’re after a slower, more authentic kind of holiday where you can really switch off and disconnect.

6. Niue

Flight time from Australia: 12-15 hours (via Auckland)

Niue is one of those places most people haven’t even heard of, which makes it feel extra special. It’s actually a raised coral island rather than your typical sandy atoll, so instead of long beaches you get dramatic cliffs, caves, and insanely clear water. It’s one of the best places in the world to swim with whales (in season), and because tourism is still pretty low-key, everything feels quiet and uncrowded. Perfect if you want something totally different from the usual tropical escape.

7. Lord Howe Island

Flight time from Australia: 1-2 hours

If you don’t want to travel too far, Lord Howe Island is honestly one of Australia’s best-kept secrets. It’s only about a 2-hour flight from Sydney, but it feels like a completely different world. The island is UNESCO-listed, visitor numbers are capped, and everything is incredibly pristine – from the lagoon to the hiking trails. You can snorkel with fish straight off the beach, bike everywhere, and climb Mount Gower if you’re up for a challenge. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but the untouched nature and exclusivity make it feel really special.
