Heavy winter fog has forced the National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP) to temporarily shut down multiple sections of Pakistan’s motorway network, citing dangerously low visibility and driver safety concerns.
According to the latest situation report, the following stretches have been closed due to fog:
M-1
Peshawar to Swabi
M-2
Thokar Niaz Baig to Kot Momin
M-3
Faizpur to Rajana
M-4
Sher Shah to Abdul Hakeem, and Pindi Bhattian to Gojra
M-11
Lahore to Sambrial
The closures have affected key corridors linking major cities including Peshawar, Lahore, Faisalabad and Sialkot, causing delays for inter-city commuters and cargo movement during peak travel hours.
Motorway Police said dense fog is a recurring winter hazard and a leading factor behind serious crashes on roads, urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, maintain safe distance, and use fog lights where required. Officials also advised drivers to follow NHMP alerts and travel updates before setting out.
Later advisories indicated conditions began improving by late evening, leading to partial reopening on some routes, while restrictions continued in certain areas, particularly for heavy vehicles on M-4, with M-11 remaining fully closed as visibility was still unsafe.
