.8M upgrades set for Maxlay Reserve with new playground, dog park and community spaces

A transformation is on the horizon for Modbury Heights’ Maxlay Reserve, with plans now locked in for a $1.8 million upgrade that will turn the currently undeveloped space into a spot for the locals to enjoy.

The plan has been shaped by extensive local feedback and designed with the goal of creating a space that works for everyone. With young families, dog owners and locals all looking for a place to unwind, the reimagined reserve will bring something that people of all ages and lifestyles can utilise.

The redevelopment will feature both junior and senior playgrounds, complete with shade structures to make year-round play possible. Local dog owners have also been considered in the plans, with a dedicated dog park included, as well as a single-use dog area, perfect for those who prefer a quieter, more controlled environment for their pets.

The reserve will open up into expansive irrigated green spaces, ideal for everything from a casual kick of the footy to picnics in the sunshine. New picnic areas, additional tree planting and landscaped gardens have all been included in the plans to help create a relaxed, inviting atmosphere, while designated car parks will improve accessibility for visitors.

Within the project, the future has been thought about thoroughly. There’s a strong focus on sustainability, which will see new planting and irrigated lawns to help cool the surrounding area, support local biodiversity and build a more resilient green space over the years to come.

Mayor Marijka Ryan said the project is going to make a real difference for locals. “Imagine living near a space like this – somewhere you can go for a walk, let the kids burn off energy or simply enjoy being in nature close to home,” shared Mayor Ryan. “Access to quality open space supports physical and mental wellbeing, and this upgrade will make that part of daily life for more residents.”

The project will be delivered in stages, with early works expected to begin over the next few months, pending final budget decisions. If all goes to plan, the full upgrade is likely to be completed by early 2027.

The development has also received a funding boost from the State Government, committing $490,000 during the recent election campaign.

Once complete, Maxlay Reserve is looking to become a go-to destination for the community.
