In a shocking case from Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district, police have arrested Maulana Irfan-ul-Qadiri, head of a local madrasa, for allegedly raping a 16-year-old student. However, the medical examination of the girl has not confirmed sexual assault, officials said on Tuesday.
The incident was reported from Mohalla Durgapurwa, where Qadiri runs Rizvia Gulshan-e-Fatima Madrasa, which also houses around 40 girls in an attached hostel.
According to police, the minor girl from Lakhimpur Kheri had accused the Maulana of raping her and threatening to kill her if she disclosed the incident. Following her family’s complaint, an FIR was lodged and multiple police teams were formed to trace the accused. Qadiri was arrested shortly after.
Police sources said that the medical report of the survivor did not confirm evidence of rape. “The investigation is still underway. The girl’s statement under Section 164 CrPC will be recorded before a magistrate, and all aspects of the case are being verified,” said Sitapur Superintendent of Police.
Preliminary enquiries have revealed that the student’s madrasa fees for nearly two years were pending, raising suspicions of a possible financial dispute between the family and the accused. Police are investigating whether the payment issue may have contributed to the allegations.
Authorities also found that the madrasa, located on the upper floor of Qadiri’s residence, was being run without proper authorisation. Officials are now looking into the legality of the institution’s operations.
