Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday dismissed allegations made by the BJP that he sought an alliance with the party at the Centre in 2024 for the restoration of statehood. Abdullah made his denial public on Sunday, directly addressing comments from opposition leader Sunil Sharma.
Abdullah responded to the BJP’s claims by posting on X: “I swear on the Holy Quran that I didn’t seek an alliance with the BJP in 2024 for Statehood or for any other reason. Unlike Sunil Sharma, I don’t tell lies for a living.”
The remarks came after Leader of the opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, alleged that Abdullah had approached the BJP in Delhi, expressing willingness to ally for the restoration of statehood.
Sharma claimed that in 2024, Abdullah again went to Delhi and offered to form a government with the BJP if statehood was restored, but his offer was rejected. Sharma challenged Abdullah to swear on the Quran that he did not go to Delhi for government formation, saying, “He won’t do it … But we are ready to say on oath wherever you want.”
Sharma has also previously stated that Abdullah made similar overtures in 2014 after the assembly elections resulted in a hung verdict.
Abdullah has recently increased his criticism of the ruling party at the Centre, stating that only his National Conference was fighting the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir.
At a rally in Budgam, Sharma challenged Abdullah to publicly confirm there were no undisclosed agreements with Delhi.
Sharma concluded by referencing earlier attempts at partnership, saying the BJP leadership refused such “opportunistic overtures.”
