A massive landslide killed a man in Kerala’s Idukki district and severely injured his wife. The incident took place on Saturday night when the landslide occurred on the Koombanpara National Highway, following heavy rains. It left the couple trapped under a concrete slab.

Soon, the rescue operations began. The police, firefighters, and locals joined forces and managed to rescue the woman around 3 am and sent her to the local hospital. However, the rescue team found the man dead after pulling him out.

Talking about the rescue operations, Deen Kuriakose, the Member of Parliament from Idukki, said that the rescue operations are at the final stage, and an NDRF team is also heading towards the affected place.

Following heavy rain in multiple Kerala districts, the Idukki district administration had asked residents to evacuate nearly two days back, anticipating a landslide. The couple, living in the Adimali village of the district, had earlier moved out; however, they came back to collect some documents on Saturday night when the tragic incident occured.

As per sources, nearly five-to-six houses have been damaged due to the landslide. There may have been more casualties if people had not moved out of the area earlier.

The landslide resulted from the incessant rain in districts like Palakkad, Idukki, Thrissur, and Thiruvananthapuram. The water level at various dams in these districts is already high. For instance, in the Ponmudi and Madupetty dams of Idukki, the water level has received a red alert status, and in the Sholayar dam in Thrissur, it has reached orange alert status. In Walayar, Malampuzha, Moolathara, and Chuliyar dams of Palakkad, the water level has approached its maximum storage capacities, prompting authorities to open the shutters by several centimetres.
