In separate incidents, two groups comprising 11 fishermen from Nagapattinam district sustained injuries after they were allegedly attacked mid-sea by unidentified persons, suspected to be from Sri Lanka, on Sunday (October 5, 2025) night. The incidents occurred east of Kodiyakarai.
Coastal Security Group (CSG) sources said a group of six fishermen from Nambiyar Nagar in Nagapattinam district set sail on board a registered fibre boat at around 2 p.m. They were fishing east of Kodiyakarai at around 8 p.m. when eight persons, suspected to be from Sri Lanka, arrived on two boats and boarded the fishermen’s fibre boat.
The group allegedly attacked the Nagapattinam fishermen with iron rods, wooden logs, and knives, causing injuries to them, and reportedly robbed a silver chain, an engine, a mobile phone, a GPS gadget, a light battery, and a walkie-talkie set from them, said the CSG sources, attributing it to the injured fishermen.
The six injured fishermen were identified as: S. Vignesh (28), S. Vimal (26), S. Sugumar (31), V. Thirumurugan (31) V. Murugan (38), and P. Arun (27). They returned to the shore in the early hours of Monday (October 6) and got admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Nagapattinam.
In the other incident, a group of five fishermen ventured into the sea from Nambiyar Nagar on board an unregistered fibre boat on Sunday afternoon. They were fishing east of Kodiyakarai when a group of eight persons, suspected to be from Sri Lanka, came on two boats. The group allegedly attacked the fishermen and robbed an engine, a GPS gadget, five mobile phones, and a fishing net weighing around 500 kg.
The injured fishermen were identified as M. Sasikumar (30), S. Udaysankar (28), S. Sivasankar (25), M. Kriba (29), and R. Kamlesh (19). Barring one injured fisherman who was taken to Thanjavur for treatment, the remaining four are undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Nagapattinam, sources said.
