MicroProse and solo developer Rowye’s Darkenstein 3D, a self-described love letter to Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, is now available to add to your Steam library. Best of all, it’s free! If you want to support Rowye, you can always spring for the soundtrack, which is composed by Rowye, Logan Mayhew and Jake “The Voice” Parr, and is currently available with a 10% discount until November 4.
Built as both a tribute and an evolution of classic FPS shooters from the 90s, Darkenstein 3D blends pure old-school skill-based combat with modern twists in physics, gore, and environmental chaos. You play as the Hobo Guy: a furious American drifter lost in enemy territory, armed with nothing but a shotgun and pure vengeance. Gunther, your loyal dog companion, was taken during a Nazi raid. Now he’s locked away deep inside enemy fortresses. It’s time to bust him out and get revenge.
There’s no cover, no aim assist, and no handholding to be found here. Just movement, aim, and survival. Dodge bullets, strafe through firefights, and master the deadly rhythm of retro combat. While you may not have Gunther, you’re still able to turn the battlefield into chaos with your vicious rat sidekick. Distract enemies, combo with grenades, and create absolute carnage across 13 different stages, ranging from castles, caves, valleys, and desert towns.
