NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — From the powerful patriotic music to the star-studded lineup, folks lucky enough to be in the building on Sunday were treated to quite a tribute concert.
“It’s a celebration of all things military,” said Corporal Christopher Prelle, Communications Strategies and Operations Combat Videographer with Marine Barracks Washington D.C.
The City of Philadelphia hosted the free “Victory at Sea” concert, marking the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Tonight’s program delivered everything from fan favorites to stirring patriotic tributes, each moment crafted to inspire pride in the Navy, the Marine Corps, and the nation.
“This is very exciting, so we have sailors and marines working around the globe every day of the year, standing the watch, keeping us safe and free, back here at home. So, it’s a great opportunity to take a little time and celebrate that service,” said Adam Grimm, Master Chief Musician and Public Affairs Officer with the Navy Band.
Headlining tonight’s performance, the U.S. Navy Band and the U.S. Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps, alongside Philadelphia’s own Patti LaBelle and American Idol alum, and Doylestown native Justin Guarini.
“I have family members who are in the navy and it’s just awesome that I get to do this here in Philadelphia for this amazing group of people who just sacrifice every single day so that we can live the life we live,” said Guarini.
Due to weather concerns, the event was moved from Independence Mall to Temple University’s Performing Arts Center.
“We had to move everything around because of the winds and we’re just delighted that it’s working out,” said George Leone, President of Homecoming 250 Navy Marine Corps.
Although the event wasn’t open to the public, organizers were proud to deliver a powerful show that streamed on 6abc to viewers watching from home.
“The audience is going to be really engaged in the history of the navy, the importance of having a navy and the value that we bring,” said Kenneth Blackmon, Vice Commander at U.S. Fleet Forces Com
