Who doesn’t love a good psycho-biddy movie? Often over-the-top and uncomfortably dark, they’re a potent blend of horror and humor. So, whether you’re a fan of hagsploitation, true-crime, or both, you won’t want to miss Dorothea. Based on the real-life case of the Death House Land Lady, the film has officially landed on VOD today through Epic Pictures’ horror label, DREAD.
Read the Synopsis:
Dorothea is a chilling true-crime horror that unearths the monstrous secrets of Dorothea Puente, a soft-spoken grandmother who drugged, murdered, and buried her elderly and disabled tenants beneath her garden. Behind her warm smile lurked a predator who used kindness as bait and survival as justification. As the story peels back layers of trauma, deception, and calculated cruelty, it reveals a harrowing portrait of a woman shaped by abuse and driven by greed. Dorothea forces audiences to confront the terrifying truth that real evil often hides in plain sight.

Many of us have had our experiences with a bad landlord, but this lurid tale takes the whole damn cake. During the 1980s, Dorothy Puente ran a boardinghouse in Sacramento, California, where she was accused of killing nine people.
In a recent interview with Dread, star Susan Priver (who plays Dorothy) discussed why she believes audiences keep coming back to true-crime thrillers. “I think we’re drawn to the psyches of people who are capable of committing heinous crimes. How could anyone be capable of that?” But don’t worry. Common to the psycho-biddy genre, Priver promises that the film has “lots of humor” to go along with the dark material.
Written/directed by Chad Ferrin (Pig Killer, Ed Kemper), Dorothea follows the release of Ed Kemper as part of DREAD’s inaugural slate of biographical true-crime horror films.
The film also stars Lew Temple (The Walking Dead), Brinke Stevens (House on Haunted Hill), Ginger Lynn (The Devil’s Rejects), Brenda James (Slither), Cassandra Gava (Conan the Barbarian), Cyril O’Reilly (Murder, She Wrote), Ezra Buzzington (Ed Gein), Robert Miano (Fast & Furious), Brandon Kirk (Ed Kemper) and William Salyers (Batman: Arkham Shadow).
