To Your Eternity’s Reiji Kawashima & Kenjiro Tsuda Detail Their Characters’ New Journey in Season 3

The anime adaptation of Yoshitoki Oima’s epic fantasy drama manga series To Your Eternity is returning for a third season this coming Fall 2025 anime season. Times have changed for the ever-curious protagonist, Fushi, as he awakens from a deep slumber to learn the world has greatly changed. Tall buildings line up the land, with electricity keeping spaces bright and new surroundings to explore.

Although many years have passed, the Knockers remain a threat. And they have bided their time waiting for Fushi’s return, having all secretly integrated into human society unbeknownst to him.

Anime Trending had a special chance to interview the anime’s two main stars: Reiji Kawashima (voice of Fushi) and Kenjiro Tsuda (voice of The Beholder), at this year’s Anime NYC, to talk about their favorite moments from past seasons and what fans can expect from the third season.

In To Your Eternity, we’ve seen Fushi go through a lot of emotional stress and maturity. How does he adapt to the new world and its modern surroundings in season three?

Reiji Kawashima: Because Fushi always has the curiosity — regardless of the era he’s in — he’s good at adapting to wherever he’s thrown into. He doesn’t get attached to how things were, or how it’s supposed to be. I think that Fushi really enjoys the modern world. He was searching for a peaceful place — one of his goals was to find that place. He kind of arrived there because there’s no strife there. So he’s maybe enjoying the peaceful time he’s finally found.

You’ve voiced Fushi for two seasons now. How has your understanding or interpretation of your character changed over time?

Reiji Kawashima: Fushi doesn’t like pain, right? He wants to be happy and surrounded by his friends. However, [as] the location and time change, Oima-sensei puts him in different environments. So his struggle kind of shifts from being physical to sort of mental. Yes, of course he wants to be happy with his friends, but what does that happiness mean in the modern world in this situation? I’m figuring out what that means, the meaning of happiness in the modern world, as Fushi finds out.

Tsuda-san, you’re known for playing a lot of complicated characters over your long career, some of whom are protagonists/good guys, and some who are bad guys/antagonists. How complex is The Beholder character, given that he serves as the series’ narrator?

Kenjiro Tsuda: The Beholder is really one of the unique roles that I’ve ever played because, yes, he’s the narrator, but he’s also a part of the story as well. Yet, his stance is a little vague because he is a character in the story without participating in the story. I try to erase [any] sort of humanness from him, so that I kind of stay objective and removed from the story. In that case, it’s a very complicated role that I’ve never played before.

It’s really the idea of subtraction — how can you subtract what is unnecessary? That’s kind of the approach when it comes to playing this role.

The new trailer for the third season shows The Beholder telling Fushi a shocking revelation. What role does The Beholder play in the third season, and how has his relationship with Fushi changed? Does he adapt well to the new world?

Kenjiro Tsuda: As a role, the stance of The Beholder doesn’t really change in season three. Like you said, a shocking revelation is revealed in season three, and that involves Fushi and pretty much everybody in that world. That’s something that the viewers can look forward to in season three.

Throughout the series, Fushi has made a lot of close bonds and friendships with several characters like March, Gugu, Pioran, and many others. What was it like seeing your character connect with all of them throughout the series and knowing about their willingness to stay with him even after their passing?

Reiji Kawashima: I was struck by the kindness of those people who surround Fushi because if I were in his place — if I’m immortal and can be with somebody for a long time — would I want to stay with somebody for such a long period of time? I really question that. Fushi doesn’t really like parting because it’s painful for him, so that’s all the more reason he wants to treasure all the people he encounters and wants to be with them as long as possible. Those friends kind of affect him, and he affects them. So it’s kind of a mutual relationship.

Have any of the story arcs in this season or earlier seasons inspired or touched you deeply? Were there any moments that surprised you?

Reiji Kawashima: What I remember is season one, episode four. March says something along the lines of she wants to know everything — that becoming an adult is about learning and knowing everything. That line really struck me because I never really thought of it that way. And in episode one, [with] the boy, even though there’s the unknown and it might be a terrible world outside, he still wants to know and wants to go out there. Those moments are kind of how I can relate personally because that’s how I feel at the bottom of my heart.

Kenjiro Tsuda: Similarly, the March arc was when we find out what kind of story this is, so it really left an impression on me. Also, I’ve talked about this many times, but episode one is really striking because the boy dies, and death is the beginning of the story. And that’s really unique and very striking.

What are you most excited for viewers to experience in To Your Eternity season three?

Reiji Kawashima: In season three, Hayase’s descendant, Mizuha, is in the key visual, and she plays a big role. She apparently has a lot of history behind who she is and her character. Fushi maybe finally finds love, or maybe not, because romantic love has been sort of something that he doesn’t quite understand in the previous seasons. But in season three, it may become personal and maybe he’ll fall in love. So that’s something people can look forward to.

Kenjiro Tsuda: Fushi has been on this long journey, and this journey has been far removed because the time is really ancient, and the story [takes place] centuries before. Now, he’s in the modern world, so we can relate to his experience. It’s almost like Fushi is living in our society and world now. Season three kind of becomes the audience’s own story, so you can look forward to it that way.

Interpreter: Tomoko Sater

To Your Eternity is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. Season three will premiere in Japan on October 4, 2025.
