I love it when a legacy sequel to a much-loved franchise ultimately makes its way into production. I say that because, with an existing IP, there are often many barriers to getting a new installment off the ground. The studio will naturally have strong opinions as will fans. So, it’s like these projects are being lensed under a microscope.
Perhaps even more exciting than seeing a legacy sequel to a beloved property make its way into production is watching such an effort resonate. After all of the stops and starts, rewrites, and various other barriers to release, it’s a joy to see a film beat the odds and connect with fans and critics.
Final Destination: Bloodlines is a glorious example of such a feature that not only saw the light of day but also revitalized a beloved franchise, took the box office by storm, and won over critics. That’s a resounding success story if I have ever heard one. After all of that, the film continues to pay dividends, in fact, Bloodlines currently sits as the most watched premium VOD title on the Amazon platform!
With that in mind, let’s take a moment to celebrate some of the picture’s accomplishments in greater detail. The film is ‘certified fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with a critical approval rating of 93%. Not to mention, the latest installment in the Final Destination franchise is also ‘verified hot’ by Rotten Tomatoes users at 87%. That means the flick holds the rare distinction of winning over the majority of fans and critics! Additionally, the picture raked in over $284 million at the global box office.
Our Mary Beth McAndrews is among the critics who connected with this one. In her 4-star review, she hailed the film as “a disgusting delight.” I think that statement sums the flick up perfectly. Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein have delivered a gruesome treat that breathes new life into the franchise. Here’s hoping the success of the latest Final Destination picture will pave the way for more standout series installments down the road.
