THE CLIFFHANGER | Write Out Loud

(The reference to “Time’s winged chariot” is lifted from Andrew Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress” or, as it ought more appropriately be titled “Get yer clouts down”.)

They speak of The Cliffhanger – those in the know

And I’d certainly recommend anyone go

If ever you’re visiting Dorset, although

It’s a bit of a haul up the cliff –

There is no fenicular lift.

I’ve mentioned before of my visit there when

I sat at the cliff top at Highcliffe and then

I sipped at a beer; well, I’m back there again,

Enjoying the view just the same;

It seems though it’s broadcast its fame.

It’s busier now than when I came before

They monitor customers held at the door;

At one time, I reckon, because of the law

But these days it’s just legacy –

A posh affectation for me.

But don’t get me wrong it deserves its success

It’s still a grand place to unwind from your stress

Away from the grindstone’s continuous press

Of deadlines and targets and tension;

But me? I’m drawing my pension.

In one sense the hours pass slowly for me

Though “Time’s winged chariot” glides silently

Best spend my last days looking out to the sea

From The Cliffhanger absorbing the view

There’s nothing that I’d rather do.
