Stephen King Shares Bold Theory About the Ultimate Killer on ‘Murder She Wrote’

It’s not horror, but bear with me. Anyone who grew up watching Dawson’s Creek or Degrassi had to wonder what on earth was going on in those towns. I grew up in a quiet suburb of Maryland, and our most noteworthy event was an escaped emu. Bodies weren’t dropping regularly. There was no scandal. We didn’t have kids joining gangs every other day like in Seventh Heaven.

Heck, as a fan of Law & Order and its expanded universe, I question why any sane parent would send their child to Hudson University, the fictional site of so many of the show’s crimes. All of this is to say, it’s awfully alarming that Cabot Cove, the coastal hamlet featured in the long-running series Murder She Wrote, had an estimated 274 murders over the course of the show’s 12-year run. For context, the fictional town in Maine has a population of about 3,500 people. That’s suspicious, and famed horror writer Stephen King seems to be suggesting the culprit was in plain sight. Stream the whole series free on Tubi, and learn more below.

Per Tubi: Jessica Fletcher, a professional writer and amateur sleuth, employs her intellect, charm, and persistence to solve every crime she encounters.

Stephen King seems to be contending that Jessica Fletcher (the late and radiant Angela Lansbury) was the mastermind behind the hundreds of mysterious deaths plaguing her quiet little town. Which isn’t that hard to believe, really, since whenever Murder She Wrote moved beyond Cabot Cove, sure enough, Jessica Fletcher found herself in the middle of a murder investigation.

Hell, Jessica Fletcher’s racking up stiffs faster than the clown in Derry at a kid’s birthday. Cozy little town, my ass.

Now, I’m not saying Jessica Fletcher was responsible, though as the years go on, it’s getting much harder to ignore the mounting evidence. Her sheer proximity to so many deaths is certainly suspicious, as is her convenient friendship with Tom Bosley’s Sheriff Amos Tupper. Perhaps she had some behind-the-scenes help with her homicidal machinations. With a reboot on the way starring Jamie Lee Curtis, maybe we’ll finally get the truth we’ve all been so desperately searching for.

In the meantime, be certain to check out Murder She Wrote streaming in full on Tubi. It’s a good one, and while I’m sure you’ve seen it before, odds are you’ve forgotten several episodes. Might I recommend the Season 5 episode where Betsey Palmer is dropping bodies like Pamela Voorhees? Let me know what you think over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
